On Wired's Newspapers Should Really Worry, are some disturbing numbers on where print media is headed. I've always argued that reading print vs. online is more of a generation issue, but eventually, online (or e-ink) will dominate. What I find amusing is that many people in the publishing industry don't see the impact this will have in the next few decades.
The advertising industry will probably start suffering first, as it scrambles to find creative ways of reaching the 18-34 year old demographic and slowly starts moving away from print.
Publishing industry doom?

I don't think there is too much to worry about for print media. I see two possible scenarios:
1) News available online does cause the print medium to decline. But, it could well be the same companies owning the web medium as own the print medium. Thus, not a big problem for the companies or employees. They just go through some adjustments.
2) The web acts as a catalyst in the same way VCRs did for movie theaters. When VCRs came out, many predicted the end of movie theaters. But, just the opposite happened. People got more excited about movies and theater attendance climbed.
DCD has a good point.
I'd guess magazines will go square back, up market- increasingly valued as objets d'art. Newsmagazines, seriously compromised by their decades long aping of pop and aging teen glamour magazines, will die, replaced entirely by online as they merge with TV coverage.
But what do I know?
